Elizabeth was waking up, but refused to open her eyes yet. Today was the dreaded day when the Bingleys were to arrive. What would this Jane think of the poor substitute of her sister who didn’t answer her letters properly for the last two months? She buried her face into the pillow, but it felt different; much less silky and not so soft. She stiffened and sniffed the pillow - it definitely smelt differently, no lilac, lavender, and goose down, but the good old detergent her mother had used for years.

That could not have happened… not in such an easy way. After all that she’d had gone through with not eating and fainting, praying and crying, she was to come back in her sleep, just like that… No way; it was too simple.

She counted to three, and with a wildly banging heart, opened her eyes. She closed them and snapped them open once again, rubbing her eyelids for better effect.

“YES! YES! BLOODY HELL, YES!” she screamed at the top of her lungs, jumping out of her old, narrow bed to the window. “YES, YES! I’M BACK! I’M BACK!” she yelled an octave higher than before, seeing the quiet street her parents had lived on for the last fifteen years.

She shut the window and bounced back to her bed, kneeling on it with her hands together in prayer.

“Good God, thank you so much. I swear to never forget that you brought me back. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

The door opened violently, and her pajama clad parents stood in the doorway with her two youngest sisters in tow.

“Family!” she exclaimed, running to the astonished Bennets. She threw her arms around her mother’s neck, gripping her tightly.

“Mom, I’m so happy to see you!” She turned to her father, going for a hug. “Dad, you’re here too!”

Fanny Bennet pushed her daughter gently at the arm’s length. “Lizzy, how are you feeling?” the woman asked, eyeing her suspiciously. “A headache again?”

Elizabeth shook her head, grinning widely. “Just happy to see you all!”

A heavy frown graced her father’s countenance. “Are you sure, Lizzy? Should we call a doctor?”

“No, I’ve never felt better, believe me,” she sang.

Her parents exchanged confused looks, while Lydia whispered loudly so that everyone could hear. “I told you from the very beginning that she got all messed up in her head since that day when the car hit her.”

Kitty nudged her strongly. “Don’t say that. She’s been much better lately.”

“Better?” Lydia scowled. “She will burn us in our own beds one night, I just feel it.”

“Girls.” Fanny Bennet turned to them. “Go to your room and dress yourselves.”

“But it’s still so early, Mum,” Kitty whined. “It’s Saturday, and school is finished. If not Lizzy’s shrieks, we's still be asleep.”

Fanny glared. “Then go back to bed for now, only remember you are helping me with the groceries and cleaning later today.”

Lydia pouted. “That’s so unfair. Why can't Lizzy help you today if she’s so happy to see you first thing in the morning?”

“You know very well that Lizzy is going with Mr.
